Volunteers
We need your support
Whether you volunteer for one day or for life, you can make a direct impact on the lives of California young people. We welcome new volunteers to help us inspire problem solvers to create a better future.
Work directly with students in your area
We always put our students first and place their needs and interests above all else. These roles help ensure that together we deliver great student experiences.
Every team or individual works alongside an adult who serves as their coach or adult sponsor. While coaches are often educators who may utilize their classroom time for Future Problem Solving, anyone may serve as a coach. Parents, administrators, retired teachers, alumni, and other professionals interested in helping students become better prepared for the future are all welcome. This includes experienced senior division students (with adult sponsors) who often give back by volunteering to help younger students.
Coaches get started by training in our 6-step problem solving process via workshops, webinars, or self-directed learning. The time commitment varies greatly by student age and experience level as well as by program.
Future Problem Solving California includes volunteers who take on leadership roles, often as board members. These positions may involve recruiting, training, competition planning, event management, fundraising, communications, promoting Future Problem Solving to local schools/organizations, or other administrative duties as needed.
We also often need officials to monitor students during our California State Finals. Tasks may include running a registration table, helping students check their paperwork, giving other directions onsite, and/or serving as a judge for our action plan skits. Being an event monitor is typically a one day commitment.
Students sometimes ask for additional support – often from parents, guardians, older siblings, or older students. Supporting a student might involve teaching a skill, providing a meeting place, finding supplies, or traveling with students as a chaperone.
Work behind the scenes to help students learn
Many of our more flexible roles do require some specialized knowledge and skills. With each position, you help many students learn, grow, and prepare for the future.
Each year, evaluators assess the submissions of student work and provide authentic assessment and feedback for each of our competition programs. All California evaluators must complete virtual training in the program(s) they wish to evaluate and submit samples of their evaluation for review. The scores are compared to the world finals evaluators who scored the same booklets in competition and feedback is provided to the certifying evaluator.
Many alumni find serving as an evaluator rewarding. Experienced senior division students may certify to evaluate younger divisions. Often, college students and professionals find evaluating fits their schedules well. Current coaches, parents, and other FPS California leaders may choose to wear this hat, too. Retired coaches, educators, and professionals also enjoy staying connected by evaluating student work.
Our signature Global Issues program depends on writers to bring five new topic's future scenes to life each year. Our FPS headquarters organization places writers into teams for each topic. Once groups are formed, members interact virtually, bouncing ideas back and forth until they create their future scene storyline. It is up to the writing team to come up with a creative and futuristic situation for students to solve using the problem solving process. Read more about this critical role here.
Our global Student Advisory Council plans and hosts expert panels on the annual topics of study to help their peers research each critical issue. They appreciate introductions to professionals with topic expertise and a willingness to share their insights.
In addition, during our annual global review process for every future scene, we solicit feedback from those with expertise in education, the topic, futurism, and fostering DEIB. It takes a community to pull together new future scenes on our annual topics and make sure they are competition-ready. We welcome volunteers to help with this important work making sure our topics and future scenes engage and inspire problem-solvers.
FPS headquarters also welcomes feedback and input on any and all Future Problem Solving content. Our educational outcomes are proven to be life changing for students so we must embrace what matters and what works in delivering our programs. We lean into this context to celebrate successes and replicate them with best-in-class tools, training, evaluations, communications, and shared resources to nurture our global affiliate network.
